Dr. Jean-Yin Tan serves as an Associate Professor (Teaching) at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. She is also a Member of the Cumming School of Medicine, Office of Health and Medical Education Scholarship, and serves as Academic Lead for the Teaching and Learning Grants Program at the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. With a distinguished career spanning equine medicine, academic leadership, and educational innovation, Dr. Tan has made significant contributions to veterinary education and clinical practice. Dr. Tan's educational background includes: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University (2005) Internship at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center Residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at University of Minnesota MBA (with Honours) completed in 2022 Professional Management Certification (2020) Dr. Tan's research focuses on pedagogical innovations in clinical skills assessment and service-learning, alongside clinical research in equine internal medicine and point-of-care ultrasound. Her work has significantly advanced veterinary medical education through innovative clinical partnerships, particularly with Indigenous communities in Canada. She has developed transformative programs in clinical skills training and business education for veterinary students, integrating practical clinical experience with professional development. Analysis of Dr. Tan's publication record reveals a strong interdisciplinary approach spanning veterinary clinical practice, medical education research, and social aspects of veterinary medicine. Her innovative clinical partnerships with Indigenous communities, including annual equine health rotations at Tsuut'ina and Siksika Nations, have provided valuable experiential learning while advancing reconciliation efforts. Dr. Tan has also held prominent leadership positions including Chair of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Advanced Continuing Education committee and founding Chair of the American Association of Equine Practitioners Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion taskforce. Dr. Tan leads initiatives that bridge veterinary medicine with community health through her work with Indigenous communities and her focus on service-learning. Her clinical expertise in equine internal medicine informs her educational approaches, creating authentic learning experiences for veterinary students. She has developed specialized training in point-of-care ultrasound and has been instrumental in creating innovative assessment methods including video recording for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).
