Elizabeth (Betsy) A. Baker is a Professor of Literacy Studies in the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum at the University of Missouri's College of Education, where she has served since 1996. Her work centers on digital and new literacies, the integration of technology in education, and qualitative research methods. She is the creator and host of the popular Voice of Literacy podcast and has held leadership roles, including Past President of the Literacy Research Association. Education: Ed.D. in Literacy Studies, Vanderbilt University; M.A. in Reading Education, Vanderbilt University; B.A. in Elementary Education, Furman University. Baker’s research investigates how digital communication reshapes literacy, with a focus on leveraging technologies like speech recognition (e.g., Siri, Alexa) to support struggling readers and writers across K-12 and higher education. She explores multimedia case-based instruction, sociocultural perspectives on learning, and the development of 21st-century literacies. Her innovative teaching has led to the development of transformative graduate courses in literacy and technology, and she co-developed a two-semester qualitative research sequence used across disciplines. Her recent publications reflect a consistent trajectory in digital literacy, teacher education, and technology integration, emphasizing practical applications in real classrooms. These works often examine how digital tools can bridge oral and written language, support preservice teachers, and enhance writing processes. Dr. Baker has been recognized with numerous awards, including: UM System’s Thomas Jefferson Award MU Kemper Fellow Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award (2010) National and International Awards for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (2011) University of Missouri System President’s Award for Innovative Teaching (2012) She actively advises graduate students, several of whom have become faculty members. Her mentoring emphasizes critical thinking, reflective practice, and real-world pedagogy. She has led college-wide initiatives to improve doctoral training in qualitative research across fields such as nursing, educational leadership, and social work. She is also involved in developing an app to support literacy through speech-to-text technology. Baker leads or contributes to research teams focused on digital case-based learning, literacy coaching, and online teacher education communities. Her lab and scholarly work are centered on transforming teacher preparation through technology and sociocultural frameworks.
