Prof. Philip Ward is a Full Professor of Global Water Risk Dynamics at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Head of the Water and Climate Risk section. He holds a part-time role as Senior Expert at Deltares (2023–present) and was a visiting scientist at Columbia University (2013–2014). His leadership includes roles in the United Nations Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction and the UNDRR Global Risk Assessment Framework Expert Group. Education: PhD: Simulating discharge and sediment yield in the Meuse basin (VU Amsterdam, 2008) MSc (cum laude): Environment and Resource Management (VU Amsterdam, 2005) BSc: Geography (University of Manchester, 1999) Research Interests: Focuses on integrating physical and social drivers of risk to improve natural hazard management. Key areas include multi-hazard risk science, climate adaptation strategies for floods/droughts, and societal resilience. His work bridges scientific innovation with policy-relevant solutions, emphasizing global environmental challenges. Awards & Grants: European Geosciences Union Plinius Medal (2019) NWO VENI and VIDI grants (climate adaptation research) Key Projects: Coordinates the EU Horizon 2020 MYRIAD-EU project (multi-hazard risk science) and serves as Science Lead for ESA’s EO4MultiHazards. Involved in initiatives funded by the World Bank, NWO, and the EU. Teaching & Advising: Teaches courses on Water Risks, Hydrology, and Policy at BSc/MSc levels. Currently advises 14 PhD students. Labs/Teams: Leads the Global Water and Climate Risk section at IVM, collaborating with global partners on risk assessment frameworks and disaster resilience strategies.
