Professor Christian Dunn is a wetland scientist and Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Sustainability at Bangor University, affiliated with the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences within the College of Science and Engineering . He also serves as Director of Marketing and Recruitment for both the school and college. His research focuses on Nature-based Solutions (NbS), particularly wetlands for water management, pollution control, and carbon sequestration, with significant emphasis on microplastics and peatland restoration. His research interests span wetland biogeochemical cycles, constructed treatment wetlands (CTWs), climate change impacts on wetlands, and the role of wetlands in pollution mitigation. He is a passionate science communicator, engaging through media outlets like BBC, Sky News, and national newspapers, and has produced full-length BBC Radio 4 documentaries such as The Beaches (2024) and Scarred (2025). He has delivered three TEDx talks on environmental themes, including microplastic pollution and the ecological importance of wetlands. His recent publications reflect a strong trend in environmental science, particularly in microplastic research, nutrient cycling in coastal habitats, and innovative peatland restoration techniques. These works combine field studies, laboratory experiments, and policy-relevant assessments, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of his contributions to environmental sustainability. He has received notable recognition, including being named in the ENDS Report Power List 2024 as one of the top 100 UK environmental professionals. He serves as chair of the British Ecological Society's Welsh Policy Group, trustee of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT), and governor of Coleg Cambria. Prof. Dunn supervises around 15 student projects annually and established the UK’s only MSc in Wetland Science and Conservation in 2013. He leads active research projects on saltmarsh denitrification, carbon flux monitoring, and peat extraction mitigation. He is also involved in public engagement through events like the Edinburgh Science Festival, #EarthLiveLessons, and London Rivers Week. He leads the Bangor Wetlands Group as Associate Director and contributes to national and international policy discussions on sustainability and environmental protection.
