Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Lysander Fremuth is a full Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Law, Institute for Constitutional and Administrative Law. He also serves as Scientific Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Fundamental and Human Rights and as Academic Director of the postgraduate program "Human Rights" at the University of Vienna. Education: Doctorate in Law, University of Cologne (2010) – awarded the Cologne University Prize for outstanding academic achievements Habilitation in Public Law, International and European Law, University of Vienna (2017) Visiting scholar in the USA, Russia, South Africa, and Turkey Research Interests: Fremuth’s research spans national, European, and international human rights protection, with a focus on constitutional law, international criminal law, climate change and human rights, AI governance, and LGBTI rights. He has contributed extensively to legal debates on migration, asylum, and the intersection of technology and human rights. Publications Overview: His recent publications reflect a strong engagement with climate litigation, AI and human rights, migration law, and international criminal accountability. He has edited and authored numerous books and journal articles, including contributions to Oxford University Press, Springer, and leading European law journals. Scientific Awards: Cologne University Prize for outstanding academic achievements (2010) Advising and Grants: While Prof. Fremuth is currently not accepting new doctoral or master’s students due to high demand, he leads a vibrant research team including several university assistants and guest researchers. He is involved in multiple international research networks and serves on editorial and scientific boards.
