Dan Weisz is an Associate Professor of Astronomy and Head Graduate Advisor at the University of California, Berkeley . His research focuses on near-field cosmology , low-mass galaxies , and resolved stellar populations , with a particular emphasis on understanding dark matter and galaxy formation through space-based observations. Education: B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from UC Berkeley (2004); Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of Minnesota (2010). Postdoctoral Appointments: Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) program at the University of Washington; Hubble Fellow at UC Santa Cruz and University of Washington. His research has led to major programs such as the JWST Early Release Science Program for Resolved Stellar Populations and the HST Treasury Survey of M31 Satellite Galaxies , analyzing over 1000 orbits of data. He currently serves as the Project Scientist for the Ultraviolet Explorer (UVEX) mission (launch 2030), which will survey the entire sky at UV wavelengths and study low-metallicity stars in the LMC/SMC. Scientific Recognition : Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship Newton Lacey Pierce Prize (American Astronomical Society) As an educator, he has taught courses including Stellar Populations (Astro 250) , Introduction to Astronomy (Astro 7A) , and The Astronomy Data Lab (Astro 128) since 2016. His students include former members now at institutions like Caltech, Carnegie, and Princeton. His recent publications span topics from primordial black hole constraints to stellar dust in metal-poor environments , reflecting his interdisciplinary approach.
