Dr. Liane Ioannou is a Senior Research Fellow and Victorian Cancer Agency (VCA) Mid-Career Research Fellow at the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University. She is based within the Cancer Research Program led by Professor John Zalcberg, where she leads a supportive care research program focused on improving quality of life for patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers. Her work centers on the development and implementation of clinical quality registries and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in real-time clinical settings. Bachelor of Science (Hons), double major in Genetics and Psychology, Monash University PhD in Medicine, Monash University, 2013 Dr. Ioannou's research interests lie at the intersection of cancer care, public health, and patient-centered outcomes. She specializes in registry science, quality of care assessment, and supportive oncology. Her work leverages large-scale data collection to evaluate and improve healthcare delivery for cancer patients, particularly in upper gastrointestinal and thyroid cancers. She has a strong focus on patient-reported outcomes and is pioneering the integration of real-time symptom monitoring into clinical workflows. Her recent publications reflect a consistent focus on clinical quality registries, PROMs implementation, and consensus-based quality indicators in pancreatic and upper gastrointestinal cancers. These works demonstrate her leadership in translating research into practice through registry-based interventions and evidence generation. Victorian Cancer Agency (VCA) Mid-Career Research Fellow Dr. Ioannou leads multiple research projects as Primary Chief Investigator, including the PROpatient trial and national registry initiatives. She is actively involved in grant-funded research and collaborates across institutions and disciplines. She currently serves as a Chief Investigator on multi-institutional projects and accepts PhD students for supervision. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being. She is affiliated with the Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Registry (UGICR) and the Australian and New Zealand Thyroid Cancer Registry (ANZTCR), contributing to national efforts in cancer surveillance and quality improvement.
