Rohinton Emmanuel is Professor of Sustainable Design and Construction and Director of the Research Centre for Built Environment Asset Management (BEAM) at Glasgow Caledonian University, within the Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Management, School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment. He is actively involved in research, teaching, and international collaboration, currently coordinating the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programme (MUrCS) and serving as Co-Investigator on the H2020 OPERANDUM project. He is accepting PhD students and contributes to global sustainability efforts aligned with UN SDGs. Education: PhD in Architecture, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1993–1997) Master of Science in Architecture, Louisiana State University (1991–1993) Master of Science in Architecture, University of Moratuwa (1987–1990) Bachelor of Science in Built Environment, University of Moratuwa (1981–1984) Rohinton Emmanuel’s research focuses on sustainable urban development, particularly urban heat island mitigation, nature-based solutions, thermal comfort, and climate-sensitive design. His work integrates environmental design, urban planning, and meteorology to create resilient cities. He has pioneered studies on tropical urban climates and promotes machine learning applications in urban climate risk analysis. His expertise spans building energy efficiency, carbon management, and green infrastructure planning. His recent publications reflect a strong trend toward interdisciplinary urban climate solutions, combining smart technologies (IoT, AI), sustainable urban form, and community-based adaptation. Key themes include heat risk assessment, green infrastructure, high-density urban planning, and electrified transportation systems. His work bridges engineering, environmental science, and policy, with applications in both temperate and tropical cities. Scientific Awards and Recognitions: Member, EPSRC Peer Review College (2019–2025) Member, NERC Peer Review College (2019–2025) Expert Reviewer, European Commission (2019–present) Academic Editor, PLoS Climate (2022–present) Rohinton Emmanuel has supervised doctoral students and leads multiple funded research projects, including Erasmus Mundus, H2020, and NERC grants. He has served as a consultant for green building certification (LEED) and advised international bodies like the World Meteorological Organization. His external roles include editorial work for Building Research and Information and hosting academic visitors under international programs such as Science Without Borders. He leads the Research Centre for Built Environment Asset Management (BEAM) and collaborates extensively with institutions across Europe, Sri Lanka, and the UK. His team works on projects involving AI for social innovation, coastal adaptation (Muir is Tir), and healthcare built environments, reflecting a strong network in urban climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure.
