Renita Horton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering. She joined UH in 2019 after serving as an Assistant Professor at Mississippi State University, where she established the Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering Laboratory. Her research focuses on understanding mechanisms driving heart disease, lupus, and sickle cell anemia to improve clinical outcomes. Horton holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University (with a bioengineering focus) and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Mississippi State University. Key areas include modeling sickle cell vaso-occlusions, cardiac fibrosis mechanisms, and lupus-related cardiac complications. Her work integrates microfluidics, computational modeling, and stem cell engineering to bridge basic science and clinical applications. Awards & Honors: National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award Lupus Research Alliance Empowering Lupus Research Career Development Award Grants & Advising: Horton’s NSF-funded CAREER project investigates congenital heart-on-a-chip systems for cardiac fibrosis research. She actively mentors students in interdisciplinary cardiovascular engineering projects. Her lab collaborates across biomedical, chemical, and materials engineering disciplines. Labs & Teams: Director of the Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering Laboratory (CTEL) at UH, which focuses on translational cardiovascular research. Collaborates with institutions like Harvard’s Wyss Institute and the American Heart Association.
