Dr. Jacky Suen is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Biomedical Sciences and the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at The University of Queensland. He is an affiliate of the Centre for Cardiovascular Health and Research and the Critical Care Research Group (CCRG), known for pioneering work in critical care medicine, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and heart transplantation. His research focuses on improving outcomes for patients with cardiac/respiratory failure through translational studies in large animal models, including heart failure, ARDS, and sepsis. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and a PhD in Pharmacology from UQ and is a member of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. Dr. Suen’s research spans preclinical innovation, biomedical engineering, and clinical translation. His group investigates ECMO parameters, mitochondrial dysfunction in transplantation, and novel therapies for acute respiratory distress syndrome. He has secured significant funding from organizations like the National Heart Foundation and the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, supporting projects such as optimizing ECMO flow dynamics and hypothermic ex vivo heart perfusion. His publications emphasize ECMO anticoagulation, mitochondrial biomarkers in heart transplantation, and the impact of blood flow on lung function. He actively supervises Honours, MPhil, and PhD students across multidisciplinary backgrounds, with a focus on training the next generation of researchers in critical care and cardiorespiratory medicine. Dr. Suen’s work includes collaborations with industry partners and global consortia like the COVID-19 Critical Care Consortium, contributing to international data-driven insights on ECMO use in severe respiratory failure. His research aligns with the CCRG’s mission to improve patient outcomes through technological and pharmacological innovation.
