Sile O'Modhrain is a Professor in Performing Arts Technology at the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at the University of Michigan. She earned her Master's in Music Technology from the University of York and her PhD from Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). From 2001-2005, she directed the Palpable Machines group at Media Lab Europe and previously taught at Queens University Belfast's Sonic Arts Research Centre. She has developed projects like Holy Braille (microfluidic tactile arrays), Mesh (haptic backpacks), and EpipE (electronic woodwind controllers). Her work often bridges accessibility , mobile hardware , and music technology . Recent publications emphasize refreshable tactile displays , cross-modal interaction , and haptic teleoperation . Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (Award #1319922). Scientific Awards Fulbright Scholarship (1994) Best Paper Award at European Conference on Interactive Television (2003) She has collaborated with researchers like Alex Russamanno , Ian Oakley , and Georg Essl . Her career also includes prior work as a sound engineer/producer for BBC Network Radio.
