Dr Nicholas Ariotti is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and an affiliate of the Centre for Cell Biology of Chronic Disease at The University of Queensland (UQ). He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and a Doctor of Philosophy from UQ. His research focuses on cellular membrane dynamics, protein trafficking, and signaling pathways, with applications in understanding cancer biology and chronic diseases. Key research interests include caveolae structure and function, lipid interactions in membranes, and the role of membrane deformability in cellular processes. He has contributed to advancements in microscopy techniques, such as cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy, enabling precise visualization of cellular components. His work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, addressing topics like HIV capsid mechanisms, spider silk nanofibers, and mitochondrial dynamics in cell division. Dr Ariotti is actively involved in supervising PhD candidates, with current projects exploring lipid signaling in cardiovascular disease, bacterial cell envelopes for antibiotic discovery, and caveolae function. He has secured funding for projects investigating insect cell membrane deformability and clathrin-independent endocytosis. His publications span high-impact journals such as Nature , Nature Immunology , and Current Biology , reflecting his expertise in molecular and cellular biology. He maintains active collaborations with institutions globally, contributing to both fundamental and applied research in cell biology and biomedical science.
