Isaac Rodrigues Dos Santos is a Professor at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg. His research focuses on blue carbon ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrass meadows, and saltmarshes, with an emphasis on their roles in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation. He was awarded a SEK 9.1 million grant from the Swedish Research Council in 2020 for the project 'Resolving the missing carbon sink in blue carbon ecosystems: Oceanic outwelling,' positioning Sweden at the forefront of this emerging field. His work integrates biogeochemical processes, submarine groundwater discharge, and coastal acidification dynamics. Key research interests include the aquatic pathways of carbon cycles, the impact of human activities on coastal wetlands, and the development of nature-based solutions for carbon sequestration. He leads projects combining field studies, radium isotope tracing, and advanced modeling to understand carbon fluxes in coastal systems. His team uses the research vessel Skagerak for fieldwork, enhancing data collection in Nordic and global marine environments. Notable achievements include pioneering studies on inorganic carbon outwelling from tidal wetlands and its effects on coastal acidification. His work addresses gaps in understanding carbon sinks, such as the role of porewater exchange and crab bioturbation in greenhouse gas emissions. He also collaborates internationally, contributing to datasets like EURO-CARBON and advancing methodologies for assessing blue carbon stocks globally. Recognition includes the Devendra Lal Medal 2023 for contributions to geochemistry. His research bridges environmental science and policy, advocating for the preservation of coastal ecosystems to combat climate change.
