Kon-Well Wang is the A. Galip Ulsoy Distinguished University Professor of Engineering and Stephen P. Timoshenko Collegiate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he holds a tenured position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering within the College of Engineering. Previously, he served as the William E. Diefenderfer Endowed Chair Professor at Penn State University from 2000 to 2008. His academic credentials include: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, University of California at Berkeley M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, University of California at Berkeley B.S. Mechanical Engineering, National Taiwan University, Taiwan Professor Wang's research pioneers structural dynamics and controls through intelligent structural systems, with groundbreaking work in origami dynamics, reconfigurable metamaterials, and mechano-intelligence. His innovations enable advanced vibration/noise control, wave manipulation, energy harvesting, and structural health monitoring for applications in vehicle and robotic systems. He leads the Structural Dynamics and Controls Lab, driving interdisciplinary convergence between engineering physics and material science. Recent publications reveal a strategic shift toward bio-inspired adaptive structures, exemplified by origami-based acoustic barriers and fluidic reconfigurable systems. This work bridges mechanical engineering with wave physics to create tunable solutions for noise pollution and energy capture, demonstrating exceptional translational impact from theoretical concepts to real-world implementations like traffic noise barriers. His exceptional contributions are recognized through numerous elite honors: ASME Honorary Membership (2025) A. Galip Ulsoy Distinguished University Professorship (2023) ASME Robert E. Abbott Award (2021) ASME Rayleigh Lecture Award (2020) U-M Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award (2019) SPIE Lifetime Achievement Award (2011) Wang actively mentors doctoral researchers including Manoj Thota, with whom he published breakthrough work on acoustic wave tailoring. He provides strategic leadership for national research initiatives, notably guiding NSF Engineering Research Center programs to address grand societal challenges through convergence research. His lab's innovations have directly influenced major infrastructure projects including the $50M GG Brown Laboratory renovation and Walter E. Lay Automotive Lab interior overhaul.
