Dr. Julia Phillippi is a Professor and Chair of the Family Care Community at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN). She is a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) with expertise in maternal and perinatal care, midwifery education, and healthcare access. Her research focuses on optimizing birth center models, interprofessional care, and reducing disparities in perinatal care. Dr. Phillippi leads VUSN’s nurse-midwifery program and provides clinical care at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Education: MSN from Vanderbilt University and PhD from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Research Interests: Access to perinatal care, birth center care models, midwifery outcomes, and teaching/learning environments. Her work has been funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and others. Grants & Projects: Includes leadership in the Midwifery Education Access & Diversity (MEADOW) program, opioid-related maternal care studies, and interprofessional collaboration trials. She collaborates with the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists. Awards: Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (2018), Best Review Article Award (2022), and multiple teaching and peer review honors. Her work emphasizes equity, innovation in telemedicine, and reducing cesarean rates through evidence-based practices. Labs/Teams: Leads the VUSN Midwifery Practice Group and collaborates on initiatives like the Vanderbilt Integrated Center of Excellence in Maternal and Pediatric Precision Therapeutics (VICE-MPRINT).
