Stephanie Clare is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of English at the University of Washington. She holds a Ph.D. in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University (2011), an M.A. in English from the University of Victoria (2005), an M. St. in Women's Studies from the University of Oxford (2003), and a B.A. in Humanistic Studies from McGill University (2002). Her research spans feminist, queer, and trans theory, focusing on cultural and scientific representations of gender, sexuality, race, and embodiment within Anglophone and Francophone contexts. She emphasizes autotheoretical writing that blends philosophy, memoir, and cultural critique. Her work examines the intersection of affect, ecology, and identity, including the role of sensation in shaping racialized and gendered subjectivities in the Anthropocene. Key publications include Nonbinary: A Feminist Autotheory (2023) and Earthly Encounters (2019). She has held fellowships at Duke University, the University of Oxford, and Syracuse University, and previously taught at the University of Buffalo. Awards include the Duke Postdoctoral Fellowship (2013) and Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011–2013). Her research appears in journals such as Signs , Social Text , differences , and GLQ .
