Dr. Georgy Astakhov is the Head of the Quantum Technologies department at the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), leading research in quantum materials and nanophotonics. His work focuses on spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), optomechanical systems, and terahertz photonics. He develops quantum emitters, quantum sensors, and data storage solutions based on atomic-scale defects. Astakhov’s research integrates nanofabrication, quantum control, and material science to advance quantum technologies. His research interests include quantum optics, nanophotonics, and spintronics with applications in quantum computing and sensing. Key areas are defect engineering in SiC, optomechanical interactions, terahertz nonlinear effects, and room-temperature quantum phenomena. The group explores novel materials like topological insulators and Dirac materials to enhance quantum device performance. Advising and grants: Dr. Astakhov leads a multidisciplinary team at HZDR, collaborating with international institutions. His work is supported by the Helmholtz Association and DRESDEN-concept initiatives. The Quantum Technologies group at HZDR focuses on translating fundamental research into scalable quantum technologies. Labs/Teams: Director of the Quantum Technologies group within the Institute for Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research at HZDR. His team operates state-of-the-art facilities for nanofabrication, low-temperature measurements, and quantum material characterization.
