Mikael Persson serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education at Stockholm University. His work spans both theoretical and practical domains of education, with a particular emphasis on music education and vocational training contexts. He maintains active research collaborations with the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and local music teachers through the Stockholm Teaching and Learning Studies (STLS) project. His research interests center on social justice in educational settings, norm-critical perspectives, anti-racism, inclusion, and eligibility for higher music education. He examines discourses regarding reasons for engaging in music education within society and their unequal distribution. His empirical work focuses on interactional patterns in music education within compulsory schools and vocational educational settings. Methodologically, Persson employs discourse analysis, positioning theory, and discursive psychology from a social constructivist perspective, with analytical techniques drawn from ethnomethodological conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis. His recent publications (2021-2024) demonstrate consistent scholarly output focused on norm-critical approaches to music education, aesthetic versus technical competence in vocational teacher education, and practical research methodologies. Currently, Persson is engaged in three major projects: 'Sexuality, Consent and Relations within Music Education' (examining how musical creativity affects students' self-expression), a collaboration with Janne Kontio on 'Ethics Values and Norms within Vocational Education,' and work with Karl Asp on 'Musical Value as Articulated or Not in the Digital Storefront,' which analyzes representations of musical education on Swedish upper secondary school websites. Persson brings practical experience to his academic work, having served as a music teacher for ten years before transitioning to his current academic role. His research demonstrates strong connections between theoretical frameworks and practical educational applications, particularly in the areas of music education and vocational training.
