Prof. Yonatan Adler serves as an Associate Professor at Ariel University's Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology, where he also heads the Institute of Archaeology. Appointed in 2018 by the Minister of Culture to the Israeli Council for Archaeology, he bridges academic archaeology with traditional Jewish scholarship. Dr. Adler's research focuses on archaeological evidence related to Torah law observance, with particular expertise in ritual immersion pools, dietary laws, ancient tefillin from the Judean Desert, and chalk vessels used by Jews observing purity laws. His work represents a unique synthesis of traditional rabbinic perspectives and scientific-critical approaches to ancient Jewish practices. His publications demonstrate consistent focus on the material evidence for early Jewish religious practices, particularly examining how archaeological findings can illuminate the historical development of Judaism. This interdisciplinary approach connects physical artifacts with textual traditions to reconstruct ancient religious life. Member of the Israeli Council for Archaeology (2018 appointment by Minister of Culture) Adler has directed significant excavations at archaeological sites throughout Israel, most notably at 'Einot Amitai and Reina in Galilee, where Roman-era chalk vessel workshops have been discovered. These field projects directly support his research on material evidence of Jewish ritual practices during the Second Temple and early rabbinic periods. Currently completing his book The Origins of Judaism: An Archaeological-Historical Reappraisal for Yale University Press, Dr. Adler continues to lead important research at the intersection of archaeology and Jewish religious history.
