Dr. Geoffrey Payne is the President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia, as well as a Professor within the Division of Medical Sciences. He holds academic appointments in the Northern Medical Program and oversees administrative leadership roles. His academic background includes a PhD in Cardiovascular and Renal Physiology, an MSc in Neuroscience and Pharmacology, and a BSc in Behavioural Neuroscience, all from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University's John B. Pierce Laboratory, specializing in Microcirculation research. Dr. Payne’s research focuses on cardiovascular physiology, immunology, and lymphatic systems, with notable contributions to understanding microvascular dysfunction in aging, inflammatory responses, and structural valve degeneration in cardiac devices. His work integrates intravital microscopy and translational approaches to study disease mechanisms. He has authored or co-authored over 145 publications, emphasizing innovations in transcatheter valve therapies and microcirculatory biology. His recent studies investigate the impact of bioprosthetic valve remodeling, smoking effects on coronary vasculature, and Alzheimer’s-related microvascular changes. Dr. Payne also advocates for rural healthcare delivery and medical education reform, contributing to interdisciplinary medical curricula and interprofessional education models. As an administrator, he champions academic innovation and community engagement, aligning research priorities with regional healthcare needs in Northern British Columbia.
