Sinem Karaman is an Academy Research Fellow and Docent in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Medicine. She serves as Principal Investigator of the Organotypic Vasculature Lab and supervises doctoral programs in Integrative Life Science and Biomedicine.
- Education: B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Molecular Biology from Istanbul Technical University (2006, 2008), Ph.D. from ETH Zurich (2012), Docent (2018).
Her research focuses on organ-specific blood and lymphatic vasculature in development and disease, with expertise in obesity, diabetes, and inflammation. She applies intravital imaging and single-cell RNA sequencing to study vascular leakage and lymphatic dysfunction.
Recent work includes multi-omics analyses of lymphedema-induced adipose tissue, Notch-WNT crosstalk in melanoma metastasis, and VEGFR3 signaling in dural lymphatics. She has published extensively in journals like Nature Cardiovascular Research and Cell Reports Medicine.
- Scientific Awards:
- Academy Research Fellow (2020)
- Early Career Researcher (2018)
- Research Grant (2018)
- Travel Award for Poster (2018)
She leads projects funded by the Sigrid Jusélius Foundation, Finska Läkaresällskapet, and Åland Foundations, focusing on lymphatic regulation in metabolic diseases and adipose tissue dysfunction. Her lab supervises doctoral theses and collaborates internationally.
