Robert Byrne is an Associate Professor at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) within the University of Sussex Business School. He is actively involved in multiple research initiatives including the STEPS Centre, where he co-convenes the Energy and Climate Change Domain with David Ockwell, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, and the Sussex Africa Centre. His research interests focus on energy policy, sustainable development, innovation systems, and socio-technical transitions, particularly in the Global South. Byrne's work explores pathways to reduce poverty and inequality through sustainable development frameworks that consider politics, science, technology, innovation, history, and context. His research incorporates concepts such as appropriate technology, sustainable development, low carbon development, green growth, innovation systems, socio-technical transitions, strategic niche management, and political economy. His recent publications reveal a strong focus on the gender-energy nexus, transformative innovation policy, inclusive innovation in agriculture, and clean energy access in African contexts. His work frequently examines how electricity access influences gender relations, how transformative innovation policy travels across different contexts, and how clean energy technologies can be made more accessible in developing countries. He supervises multiple doctoral students and has been involved in numerous research grants focused on climate innovation, sustainable energy, and development in Africa.
