Professor Caoimhin Mac Maolain is a distinguished academic at Trinity College Dublin's School of Law, holding the rank of Professor since 2005. He previously held a Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law at the University of Exeter. His roles include teaching modules in EU Law, International Trade Law, and Food Law, as well as directing the LLM Dissertation Programme. He earned his B.C.L., LL.M., and Ph.D., with extensive expertise in EU legal frameworks and their intersection with food safety, public health, and trade policies.
Prof. MacMaolain’s research focuses on EU Law’s application to food regulation, international trade dynamics (particularly WTO compliance), and consumer protection. He has authored three seminal books, including Irish Food Law (2019) and Food Law: European, Domestic and International Frameworks (2015), alongside numerous peer-reviewed articles in top journals like the European Law Review and Common Market Law Review.
His publications address pressing issues such as Brexit’s legal implications for Ireland, obesity prevention through food labelling laws, and animal welfare standards in food production. Notable awards include a Trinity College Dublin Fellowship (2015) and a Master in Arts (jure officii) (2010).
Prof. MacMaolain advises postgraduate students in EU Law, Food Law, and International Trade Law, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to legal challenges. His work bridges academic rigor and practical policy impact, with contributions to debates on EU regulatory effectiveness, food safety accountability (e.g., EFSA’s role), and Ireland’s economic recovery post-financial crisis.
