Gerard Heuvelink is a Professor at Wageningen University and a senior researcher at ISRIC - World Soil Information. His academic journey includes an MSc from Twente Technical University (1987) and a PhD from Utrecht University (1993). He held roles as Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam (until 2003), dual appointments at Alterra and Wageningen University, and a visiting professorship at the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (since 2011). He leads the special professorship in Pedometrics and Digital Soil Mapping, focusing on integrating statistical methods with soil process understanding to enhance soil mapping accuracy and applicability. His research interests span pedometrics, geostatistics, uncertainty analysis, and spatial modeling of soil properties. He has contributed to projects like BIS-4D (high-resolution soil mapping in the Netherlands) and global soil carbon studies. He serves as Deputy Editor of the European Journal of Soil Science and editorial board member of multiple journals. Key achievements include awards such as the Richard Webster Medal (2014) and the Peter Burrough Medal (2019). His work bridges academia and practical applications, addressing challenges like soil degradation, climate change, and food security through advanced modeling techniques. He supervises projects on fertilizer recommendations, soil organic carbon dynamics, and machine learning applications in agriculture. Collaborations span institutions globally, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to soil-related challenges.
