Dr Zsófia Demjén is an Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics at University College London's Institute of Education (IOE), within the Department of Culture Communication and Media. Her work focuses on language use in health and illness contexts, including vaccination discourse, communication in healthcare, and metaphor analysis. She leads UCL's membership in the International Consortium for Communication in Healthcare and co-convenes the UCL Health Communication Network. Demjén's research employs corpus linguistics to analyze large-scale data from social media, parliamentary debates, and clinical settings, aiming to improve healthcare practices and public health campaigns. She teaches modules on language in professional contexts and is actively involved in PhD supervision and academic administration.
Her research interests include the linguistic analysis of voice-hearing experiences, humor as a coping mechanism in cancer narratives, and ethical language in clinical trials. She has contributed to interdisciplinary projects like the ESRC-funded Quo VaDis initiative, which examined vaccination discourse dynamics. Demjén emphasizes translating research insights into practical improvements for healthcare communication and patient safety.
Through her roles at UCL and collaborations with institutions like Lancaster University and Leeds University, she bridges linguistic theory with real-world health challenges. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and has implications for public health policy and medical education.
