Zsuzsanna Varhelyi is an Associate Professor of Classical Studies at Boston University, serving as Director of Graduate Admissions and the NEH Distinguished Teaching Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on the social, political, and religious history of the ancient Mediterranean, particularly the Roman Empire, with emphasis on selfhood, trauma, and religious practices. She holds a PhD in History from Columbia University and an MSW in trauma specialization from Boston University.
Teaching highlights include courses on Roman history, ancient religions, and ethics. Her work integrates interdisciplinary methods, such as practice theory and archaeology, to explore themes like sacrifice, individuality, and post-traumatic stress in antiquity. She co-authored key texts like Sacrifice in the Ancient Mediterranean (2011) and The Religion of Senators (2010).
Awards include the NEH Distinguished Teaching Professorship (2024–2027). She also maintains a clinical practice assisting students with trauma through BU’s Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation.
