Professor Eric Orlin serves as Professor of Classics at the University of Puget Sound, specializing in ancient Mediterranean religions and the intersection of religion and politics in the Roman Republic. He earned his Ph.D. from the Group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Orlin's research focuses on religious practices in the ancient Mediterranean world, particularly examining how religious institutions interacted with political power structures. His work explores the dynamics of cultural exchange, religious adaptation, and political authority in both Roman and Jewish contexts during antiquity. His scholarship demonstrates particular expertise in how religious practices served as mechanisms for political integration and resistance in the Roman Empire.
His recent publications examine the political dimensions of religious revolts, analyzing both the Maccabean Revolt and the Judaean Revolt against Rome. These works reveal patterns of leadership, cultural identity, and religious motivation in ancient resistance movements, highlighting how religious narratives were intertwined with political aspirations.
Professor Orlin is the co-founder of the Society for Ancient Mediterranean Religions and served as general editor for the Routledge Encyclopedia of Ancient Mediterranean Religions (2014), establishing himself as a significant contributor to the scholarly community in this specialized field.
