Zoltan Barany is the Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Centennial Professor in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. A leading scholar in military politics and democratization, he has authored several influential books, including Armies of Arabia (2021) and The Soldier and the Changing State (2012). His work spans comparative analysis of military institutions, security sector reform, and ethnopolitical dynamics in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

His research focuses on civil-military relations, military effectiveness, and democratization processes. He has extensively examined Gulf monarchies, postcommunist transitions, and conflicts in Southeast Asia. Recent work explores military conscription in Who Dies for the Nation?.
Barany's awards include National Fellowships at the Hoover Institution, a Susan Louise Dyer Peace Fellowship, and Life Membership at the Council on Foreign Relations.
