Zobayer Ahmmad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Vermont (UVM), within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD and MA in Sociology (Population Health) from the University of Utah, a BA in Sociology from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Kaiser Permanente Northern California’s Division of Research.
Research Interests: Dr. Ahmmad focuses on behavioral health outcomes among Asian and Latinx Americans, emphasizing acculturation effects, gender identity, and social determinants of health. His work explores disparities in mental health, substance use, and metabolic health, particularly within U.S. Asian ethnic groups. He employs quantitative methods to investigate how socioeconomic status, discrimination, and cultural adaptation influence health outcomes across lifespans.
Teaching: He teaches courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Population Health Research, and Population-Environment-Society linkages. His pedagogy prioritizes student-centered learning, encouraging critical and imaginative approaches to sociological inquiry.
Research Contributions: His 15+ publications in top journals like Socius and Annals of Epidemiology highlight key findings, including health disadvantages among Asian Americans, gendered acculturation patterns in smoking, and the role of discrimination in health disparities. Recent work leverages next-generation data to advance health equity research.
