Zhongming Liu is an Associate Professor and Associate Department Chair of Graduate Programs in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He leads the Lab of Integrated Brain Imaging and is affiliated with the Engineering of Preclinical Imaging Center. His research focuses on biomedical imaging, neural engineering, and gastrointestinal dysfunction studies, particularly leveraging MRI and computational models to investigate gastric motility and brain-gut interactions. Key interests include developing imaging techniques, modeling neural pathways, and exploring therapeutic interventions for neurological and gastrointestinal disorders.
His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining advanced imaging technologies with computational methods to understand complex physiological systems. Notable projects include surface mapping of gastric motor functions, MRI-based assessment of gastric emptying, and studying vagus nerve stimulation effects on gastrointestinal function. He also pioneers research in neural networks inspired by human vision and adversarial robustness in AI systems.
Dr. Liu’s contributions span from basic science to translational applications, with a strong emphasis on bridging engineering and clinical medicine. His lab collaborates extensively on multimodal imaging solutions and has developed novel tools for concurrent electrophysiological recordings during MRI scans. Ongoing efforts aim to personalize diagnostic and therapeutic strategies using patient-specific models derived from imaging and computational data.
