Zhongjun Jon Wu

Dr. Zhongjun Jon Wu is the Peter Angelos Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurial Surgical Science and a tenured Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also holds a Research Professor appointment in Bioengineering at the University of Maryland College Park. His research focuses on cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, artificial organ development, and bioengineering solutions for heart/lung therapies. Key areas include ventricular assist devices (VADs), artificial lungs, computational modeling of biomedical devices, and stem cell therapies.

Education: B.S.E. from Tsinghua University (1986), M.S.E. from Shanghai Institute of Optics & Fine Mechanics (1989), Ph.D. from University of Miami (1996).

Research emphasizes bioengineering design of artificial organs, large animal models for cardiovascular disease, and biological responses to medical devices. His work addresses blood damage mechanisms, platelet dysfunction, and device-induced trauma. Supported by NIH grants, industrial partnerships, and private foundations, his lab has produced over 100 peer-reviewed articles and multiple patents.

Awards include Fellow of AIMBE and leadership roles in the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO). He serves on FDA Technical Review Committees and editorial boards for ASAIO Journal and Cardiovascular Engineering and Technology.

Current projects involve pediatric VAD development, artificial lung systems, and computational optimization of blood-contacting devices. His interdisciplinary approach bridges engineering and clinical applications, aiming to improve outcomes in heart and lung failure patients.
