Zhong Fang is a Professor and Director at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He earned his B.S. (1991) and Ph.D. (1996) in Physics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. From 1996 to 2003, he conducted research at Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and the U.S. Oak Ridge National Laboratory before joining CAS in 2003.
His research revolutionized condensed matter physics through computational prediction of topological quantum materials. Key contributions include:
- Prediction/realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect
- Discovery of Dirac semimetals (Na3Bi, Cd3As2) and Weyl semimetals (TaAs family)
- Identification of 3D topological insulators (Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3)
- Development of topological materials classification frameworks
He has published over 200 SCI papers (50,000+ citations) and is a perennial Highly Cited Researcher (2014–present).
