Dr Zheng Liu is a Lecturer in Innovation Management at the University of Bristol, holding a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge. She maintains affiliations with Cambridge as a Senior Research Associate at Jesus College and a Research Affiliate in the Department of Sociology.
Her research focuses on the social processes of innovation, examining how social and cultural factors shape innovation activities in contexts such as digital transformation in China's book industry and tech sector. She has published widely across sociology, cultural economy, and management studies, and is currently developing a systematic sociology of artificial intelligence.
Her publications include the upcoming monograph Cultural Mavericks: The Business and Cultural Politics of Independent Bookselling in China (Columbia University Press, 2025) and the influential paper Sociological Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence: A Typological Reading. She is the Principal Investigator for a British Academy and Sino-British Fellowship Trust project analyzing the social structure of China's AI industry.
Dr Liu serves as an Expert Reviewer for international funding bodies including the European Research Council (ERC), ESRC, German Research Foundation, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. She has also reviewed for prestigious publishers like Routledge and top journals such as Annual Review of Sociology, Current Sociology, and British Journal of Sociology.
