Dr. Sharon Zheng is a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor) in Digital Media and Culture and Global Partnership Lead at Lancaster University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). She previously worked as a Chief Journalist in the UK, Hong Kong, and China (PRC), and held academic roles as Lecturer/Assistant Professor at UK, US, and Chinese institutions. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) since 2022, she has served on grant panels for AHRC and ESRC and reviews for Routledge and leading journals. Her research spans gender studies (feminism, motherhood), media ecosystems (British/Chinese TV), fan/celebrity culture, and digital media policy.
Teaching focuses on media, culture, and communication studies at undergraduate/postgraduate levels, integrating real-world examples with pedagogy. She supervises dissertations and welcomes PhD candidates exploring fan culture, media policy, or digital media in China. Editorial roles include Celebrity Studies, and she has secured grants from the National Social Science Fund, Volkswagen Foundation, and British Council.
Her work bridges academia and industry, addressing global media dynamics and transcultural phenomena. Notable projects include analyses of single women in Chinese TV, cross-border journalism practices, and celebrity economies in digital platforms like Xiaohongshu.
