Dr. Zhen Qian is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology, The University of Queensland. They are also an Affiliate of the Centre for Advanced Materials Processing and Manufacturing (AMPAM). Dr. Qian's research focuses on advanced manufacturing technologies, particularly the Chain-die forming process for Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) components.
Dr. Qian earned their Bachelor (Honours) of Engineering from the University of Wollongong and completed their PhD in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Queensland in 2020 with a thesis titled "Study of the design and optimization process for the Chain-die forming technology."
Dr. Qian's primary research interests center around advanced materials processing and manufacturing, with specific expertise in:
- Chain-die forming technology development and optimization
- Manufacturing processes for Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS)
- Numerical and analytical modeling of metal forming processes
- Web-warping and longitudinal strain analysis in sheet metal forming
- Forming load determination and process parameter optimization
- Tooling design for novel manufacturing technologies
Analysis of Dr. Qian's publication record reveals a consistent focus on the Chain-die forming process since 2016. Their research has evolved from fundamental studies of the process mechanics to more complex applications involving variable cross-sections and combined manufacturing approaches. The work spans analytical modeling, numerical simulation, and experimental validation, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to process development. Recent publications (2022-2023) show continued refinement of the technology with attention to specific challenges like web-warping in variable cross-section components.
Dr. Qian is actively involved in research supervision, currently serving as an Associate Advisor for a PhD project on "Development and Investigation of an Advanced Flexible Chain-die Forming Process." They previously served as Principal Advisor for a Master of Philosophy student who completed research on "Forming Load Prediction and Manufacturing Strategies in the Chain-die Forming Process" in 2023. Dr. Qian has secured research funding from SNS Unicorp Pty Ltd for the period 2020-2023 to investigate and optimize the design process for Chain-die forming technology.
As a member of the Centre for Advanced Materials Processing and Manufacturing (AMPAM), Dr. Qian collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of researchers focused on developing innovative manufacturing solutions. Their work contributes to AMPAM's mission of advancing materials processing technologies for industrial applications, particularly in the automotive sector where lightweight, high-strength components are increasingly important.
