Zhen Bai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Rochester, where she leads the ROCHCI group. Her research focuses on creating embodied and intelligent interfaces to enhance learning, communication, and well-being for diverse populations, particularly those with disabilities. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (2015) and completed postdoctoral work at Carnegie Mellon University before joining the University of Rochester.
Her research interests span human-computer interaction (HCI), augmented reality, tangible user interfaces, assistive technology, and technology-enhanced collaborative learning. Notable projects include FingAR Puppet for children with autism, ASL communication systems for deaf children and hearing parents, and AI literacy tools for K-12 education.
Bai's work has been recognized with best paper nominations at CHI (2015), ISMAR (2013), and AIED (2018). She emphasizes participatory design approaches, collaborating with educators and end-users to develop inclusive technologies. Current projects explore AI-mediated communication, filter-bubble mitigation in recommendation systems, and machine learning integration in STEM education.
Her lab, ROCHCI, focuses on transformative AI literacy experiences, embodied conversational agents, and accessible interfaces. Key collaborations include work with the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and Language Technology Institute at CMU, as well as international conferences like CHI, AIED, and IDC.
