Zhemin Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine. His research focuses on uncovering functional mechanisms of disease-related proteins using structural biology techniques like cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography. He aims to develop novel therapeutics for diseases with limited treatment options. Dr. Zhang earned his PhD from Sun Yat-sen University (China), studying microbial nucleic acid repair enzymes, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at CWRU, investigating drug resistance proteins in pathogens.
His current work emphasizes structural proteomics of mammalian tissues, including mitochondrial proteins and human liver enzymes. Key research areas include multidrug efflux pumps, bacterial pathogenesis, and antimalarial targets. Collaborations involve structural analysis of proteins such as the Plasmodium falciparum NCR1 transporter and Mycobacterium transporters. His methodologies integrate computational and experimental approaches, such as virtual screening and the 'Build and Retrieve' proteomics strategy.
Recent publications highlight discoveries in Campylobacter drug resistance mechanisms, Klebsiella efflux pumps, and human band 3 transporter dynamics. His research bridges structural insights with translational applications, addressing critical gaps in understanding microbial and human protein functions.
