Professor Zhanfeng Cui is the Donald Pollock Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Hertford College. He serves as Director of Strategic Projects China under the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division (MPLS) and as Founding Director of the Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research (OSCAR). His research bridges biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and regenerative medicine, focusing on bioprocessing, bioformulation, and medical devices for infectious disease and cancer detection.
- DSc (2009), University of Oxford
- MA (1994), Keble College, Oxford
- PhD in Chemical Engineering (1987), Dalian University of Technology
- MSc in Chemical Engineering (1984), Dalian University of Technology
- BSc in Chemical Engineering (1982), Inner Mongolia Polytechnic University
His work spans regenerative medical technologies, organ-on-chip systems, and rapid diagnostic platforms like OxLAMP™ for SARS-CoV-2. Key themes include stem cell bioprocessing, tissue engineering for neural and dermal applications, and computational tools for cell therapy commercialization. Publications highlight innovations in bioprinting, non-invasive cryopreservation, and chemical looping processes, with a focus on translational impact.
Professor Cui holds esteemed fellowships, including the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (FIChemE). He co-founded biotech spinouts such as Oxford MEStar Limited and CN BioInnovation Limited, advancing regenerative medicine and organ-on-chip technologies.
