She is also a Faculty Associate at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. Her research focuses on the intersection of technology, social movements, and governance, particularly examining the role of digital platforms in protests, AI ethics, and public health crises. Tufekci writes regularly for The New York Times and The Atlantic, addressing topics like misinformation, pandemic policy, and corporate power in technology.
Her book Twitter and Tear Gas: The Power and Fragility of Networked Protest (2017) analyzes how social media shapes modern activism. She transitioned from a career in computer programming to social science to explore technology's societal impact. Tufekci holds a PhD in Sociology and has advised international organizations on digital governance.
