Zeynep Arsel is a Professor of Marketing at Concordia University's John Molson School of Business, where she holds the Concordia University Research Chair in Consumption, Markets, and Society. Her interdisciplinary work bridges marketing, sociology, and cultural anthropology, examining how markets, consumption practices, and societal structures intersect and evolve.
Education:
- PhD in Marketing from University of Wisconsin-Madison with minors in Sociology and Cultural Anthropology
- MBA from Middle East Technical University
- BSc in Management from Bilkent University
Professor Arsel's research explores three primary streams: 1) How markets are shaped by knowledge systems, 2) The intersection of technology, consumption, and markets, and 3) Consumption in relational contexts. Her work on taste regimes and market-mediated practices has significantly contributed to understanding how aesthetic judgments shape market dynamics. She examines digital platform transformations, influencer marketing, and ethical dimensions of consumer-brand relationships with attention to social implications.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on digital market transformations, particularly how platformization affects content creation and consumer practices. She investigates the emotional economy of online content, moral dimensions of marketplace interactions, and technological mediation of consumption practices across marketing, sociology, and digital media studies.

Her work has been featured in Wall Street Journal, Globe and Mail, WIRED, Psychology Today, and numerous other prominent media outlets.
