Dr. Zeyneb Kurt is a Lecturer in Data Science at the School of Information, Journalism and Communication, University of Sheffield. She holds a BSc, MSc, and PhD from Yildiz Technical University (Turkey). Her career includes postdoctoral research at UCLA (2015–2018), where she focused on bioinformatics and received fellowships from the American Heart Association and UCLA’s Women’s Health Center. She was an Assistant Professor at Yildiz Technical University (2018–2020) and Northumbria University (2020–2023) before joining Sheffield in November 2023.
Her research interests span bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, and health informatics. She develops AI-driven models to analyze multi-omics data, predict cancer subtypes, and assess healthcare worker wellbeing. She leads the Health Informatics Research Group and supervises PhD students in AI applications for healthcare and environmental challenges.
Dr. Kurt’s scientific awards include two postdoctoral fellowships (American Heart Association and UCLA Iris Cantor). Her work spans grants in AI for medical imaging, marine debris tracking, and wellbeing analytics. She teaches courses like INF210 - Practical Programming for Data Science and INF6050 - Database Design.
Her supervision includes students working on AI for debris detection, cancer subtype prediction, and single-cell analysis. She actively collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, blending computational methods with healthcare and environmental science.
