Dr. Zehra Tonbul is an Assistant Professor of Architectural History and Theory at Özyeğin University's Faculty of Architecture and Design. She holds a PhD from Boğaziçi University (2018), an MA in History and Philosophy of Architecture from the University of Cambridge (2002), and a BArch from Istanbul Technical University (1998). Her research focuses on modern and contemporary architectural historiography, decolonial thought, and the intersection of architectural theory with intellectual history.
Dr. Tonbul's academic journey includes postdoctoral research at Berlin Museums as a Preußischer Kulturbesitz fellow, analyzing German art and architectural historiography. She teaches courses on decolonialism in architecture and has contributed to interdisciplinary projects such as urban regeneration in Tarlabaşı and Beyoğlu. Her work critically engages with Eurocentric narratives in art history, notably through studies of Ernst Diez and other 20th-century scholars.
Her research interests span architectural criticism, modernity studies, and the geopolitical dimensions of architectural historiography.
