Zbigniew Karpiński is a Professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN) where he works as a scientific employee and leads the Social Structure Research Team. He also serves as a lecturer at Collegium Civitas, teaching various sociology and statistics courses since 2006. His academic career combines strong theoretical foundations with empirical research expertise.
Professor Karpiński's research focuses on cooperation and trust, status and inequality, justice and legitimization, formal theory in sociology, and experimental methods. His work bridges theoretical modeling with empirical validation through laboratory and field experiments, survey research, and advanced statistical analysis. He has developed formal models of social stratification and tested how perceptions of social structure relate to evaluations of distributive justice.
His publication record shows consistent contributions to understanding social inequality, cooperation dynamics, and methodological issues in measuring social attitudes. Recent work (2014-2015) has focused on cooperation between individuals of equal and unequal status, discrimination against immigrants in the labor market, and methodological questions regarding perceptions of inequality. This reflects his dual interest in substantive sociological questions and methodological rigor.
- 2010 – award in the program 'Zostańcie z Nami!' (Polityka Weekly)
- 2003 – First Degree Award named after Florian Znaniecki for the best master's thesis in Sociology
Professor Karpiński's teaching covers both methodological and substantive areas, including Introduction to Statistics, Elements of Statistical Inference, Laboratory Experiments in Social Sciences, and Social Inequalities. His international experience includes a visiting fellowship at University College London and presentations at major international sociology conferences. His research is primarily funded by the National Science Centre, with projects focusing on cooperation dilemmas, social stratification, and comparative studies of food patterns and lifestyles.
He leads the Social Structure Research Team at IFiS PAN, which conducts research on social stratification, inequality, and related phenomena using both theoretical and empirical approaches. His work combines formal modeling with experimental and survey methodologies to investigate fundamental questions about social structure and individual behavior within that structure.
