Zbigniew Jerzak is a Professor of Distributed Systems at Berlin University of Applied Sciences. Previously, he served as Head of Engineering at Zalando (leading delivery optimization teams) and Head of the Deep Learning Center of Excellence at SAP. He holds a Ph.D. in Distributed Systems from TU Dresden, Germany.
His research focuses on AI applications in healthcare, industry, biodiversity, and HCI, with projects funded by DFG, BMBF, EU, and others. Key projects include
- APPL-FM (DFG): AI in cell biology
- COMFORT (EU): Healthcare data systems
- Green AI initiatives like GCA (BMUV)
- HCI innovations like Human.VR.Lab (BMBF)
He leads interdisciplinary teams and collaborates with tech startups (QualiFiction, Pyramics). Awards include the 2014 VLDB Best Paper and 2018 ACM DEBS Test of Time awards.
His advisory work includes mentoring 13 doctoral graduates, and he contributes to Berlin's data science infrastructure through initiatives like the Berlin Big Data Center.
