Zaranis Nicholas is a Professor at the Department of Preschool Education, Faculty of Education, University of Crete. His research focuses on integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education, particularly in early childhood and primary education. He holds a PhD in Mathematics and ICT from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2000), an MSc in ICT in Education (1997), a Diploma in Pedagogy (1993), an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Essex (1992), and a BSc in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (1987).
His work emphasizes the use of ICT to enhance mathematical and computational thinking, including game-based learning, mobile devices, and educational software. Key areas include Realistic Mathematics Education (RME), geometry teaching, and the role of tablets in early numeracy. He has co-authored numerous studies on preschool teachers' attitudes toward ICT, the effectiveness of digital tools in teaching concepts like addition and multiplication, and the design of educational apps for young children.
Zaranis has published extensively in journals like Computers & Education and Education and Information Technologies, focusing on topics such as ICT integration in teaching geometry, programming environments for preschoolers, and the impact of technology on student achievement. His research highlights the potential of interactive technologies to foster cognitive development and improve educational outcomes in early years.
