Zane Ābola is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery at Riga Stradins University. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms in pediatric surgical conditions, neonatal care, and fetal medicine. He has held consecutive expert roles in Clinical Medicine with the Latvian Council of Science from 2017 to 2026.
His key research interests include growth factors, peritoneal adhesions, and surgical complications in congenital anomalies. He leads projects like 'Microbiome, metabolome and biomarker analysis in neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis' and contributes to state-funded biomedical research initiatives.
Ābola has authored over 60 publications, with recent work addressing fetal bowel obstruction management, rare surgical complications, and genetic cancer syndromes. He received the Honorary Medal of the Children's Clinical University Hospital in 2019 for clinical contributions.
He actively organizes conferences, including the Baltic Association of Pediatric Surgeons annual meetings, and serves as a session chair and invited speaker in pediatric ultrasound and surgical workshops.
