Zamir K. Punja is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU). His research focuses on plant pathology and biotechnology, addressing host-fungal pathogen interactions through cellular, biochemical, and molecular approaches. He specializes in genetic engineering to enhance plant disease resistance and explores chemical, biological, and cultural strategies for disease control in crops like cucumber, carrot, and ginseng.
Education: BSc from the University of British Columbia, MSc and PhD from the University of California.
Research interests include RFLP analysis of fungal pathogens, stress/hormonal regulation of plant defenses, tissue culture applications, and the role of double-stranded RNA in fungal pathogenicity. He teaches courses such as BISC 430 (Microbe-Plant Interactions) and BISC 887 (Special Topics in Plant Biology). His lab (punjalab.wordpress.com) emphasizes advancing plant health through innovative research.
