Prof. Paul Goodwin is a Professor at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of Guelph. He holds a BSc in Biology from Villanova (1981), an MSc in Plant Pathology from the University of Minnesota (1983), and a PhD in Plant Pathology from UC Davis (1987). His research focuses on plant-microbe interactions, particularly ginseng replant disease caused by Ilyonectria mors-panacis. He employs genomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics to study soil chemistry shifts post-harvest and their impact on root rot severity in subsequent crops.
Current projects include examining saprophytic microbes' role in innate immunity suppression, sequencing pathogenic/non-pathogenic ginseng-associated microbes, and analyzing host-pathogen gene expression during infection. His lab is located in Bovey Building Room 3236, with a research webpage linked to Google Scholar.
Recent work spans honey bee immunity, maize biocontrol agents, and fungal pathogen virulence mechanisms. His research integrates field and laboratory methods to develop practical disease management strategies for crops like ginseng, pear, and wheat.
