Dr. Zaina Mahmoud is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Liverpool, part of the School of Law and Social Justice within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a BA from the University of Western Ontario, LLB and LLM from the University of Exeter, and a Wellcome Trust-funded PhD from Exeter. Her research focuses on socio-legal aspects of surrogacy, reproductive technology, and pregnancy regulation. Notably, her comparative study on surrogates' lived experiences in the UK and California informed policy reforms by the Law Commission of England and Wales and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
Her work bridges legal analysis with empirical research, addressing gaps in surrogacy law through projects like 'Children’s Voices in Surrogacy Law,' funded by the Institute of Medical Ethics and Research England. Dr. Mahmoud collaborates across disciplines, integrating bioethics and health policy into her scholarship. She has contributed to high-impact publications and presented findings to law reform bodies, influencing legislative changes. Her teaching spans modules on tort law, reproductive justice, and socio-legal methods.
