Zachary R. Morgan is an Associate Professor in the Comparative Studies Department at The Ohio State University. He specializes in modern Latin American history with a focus on race, slavery, abolition, and Afro-Latin American studies, particularly in Brazil. His research examines the intersections of state violence, labor coercion, and racial dynamics in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Dr. Morgan holds a Ph.D. in History from Brown University. His first book, *Legacy of the Lash: Race and Corporal Punishment in the Brazilian Navy and the Atlantic World* (2014), analyzes Afro-Brazilian resistance to naval corporal punishment, notably the 1910 Revolta da Chibata uprising. His current research project explores forced labor systems in Brazil during the age of abolition.
His work has been published in *The Journal of Black Studies*, *The Americas*, and *The Oxford Encyclopedia of Brazilian History and Culture*. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the *Hispanic American Historical Review* (2022–2023). Before joining Ohio State, he taught at institutions including Penn State University and Boston College.
Morgan’s research bridges military history, Atlantic studies, and diaspora scholarship, emphasizing how marginalized groups resisted systemic oppression. His articles address topics ranging from naval mutinies to colonial expositions and post-abolition social dynamics.
